Lovecraftian Horror Returns in Gou Tanabe’s Masterful Adaptation

Dark Horse Comics has announced it will release the English edition of The Shadow Out of Time, the latest H.P. Lovecraft manga adaptation by acclaimed artist Gou Tanabe. The manga is set to arrive in North American stores in Summer 2026, expanding Tanabe’s celebrated collection of cosmic horror works that bring the Cthulhu Mythos to life with stark, atmospheric detail.

This marks the latest collaboration between Dark Horse and Tanabe, following his chilling adaptations of At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu, and The Hound and Other Stories.

Story Synopsis

Originally published in 1936, The Shadow Out of Time is one of Lovecraft’s most cerebral and unsettling works, focusing on themes of identity, time travel, and forbidden knowledge. The story follows Professor Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, a man who mysteriously loses consciousness for five years—only to awaken with vivid, impossible memories of living in an alien body in Earth’s prehistoric past.

As Peaslee investigates his lost time, he uncovers a secret that spans millennia: an ancient, extraterrestrial race known as the Great Race of Yith, who project their minds through time to study civilizations. His memories suggest he may have served as one of them—and what he learns could unravel his sanity.

Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation brings the psychological terror and cosmic scale of this narrative to life with haunting, hyper-detailed illustrations and a reverent tone.
