The 2025 Harvey Awards have unveiled their nominees for Best Manga Series—and among them is the eerie, emotionally charged The Summer Hikaru Died. This recognition cements Mokumokuren’s supernatural horror series as one of the most talked-about manga in recent years, praised for its unsettling atmosphere and heartfelt storytelling.

Story Synopsis:

The Summer Hikaru Died (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) follows Yoshiki, a teenager living in a quiet rural town. When his childhood friend Hikaru goes missing, he returns… but something is wrong. Although the figure before him looks and acts like Hikaru, Yoshiki slowly realizes that it’s an inhuman entity wearing his friend’s skin. Caught between loyalty, fear, and denial, Yoshiki struggles to maintain their relationship as supernatural forces close in.

The series debuted on Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace Up platform in August 2021 and has since been collected into seven volumes. In July 2025, CygamesPictures released the anime adaptation on Netflix, directed and written by Ryōhei Takeshita.
